uring the last two decades, the IER
installed base in Nor
thern, Eastern
and Central Europe has significantly
expanded, particularly in some of the major
German airports. In 2002, it was only
logical to then set up a new service center
able to offer quick and dedicated services
to our growing number of customers.
The obvious central country was Germany.
IER chose the city of Uetze, located
30 km east of Hannover and close to three
of the largest German airports: Hannover,
Hamburg and Dortmund.
A total of 22 staff members, skilled
technicians and technical support engineers
are located in the main office in Uetze
and the two local offices at Hannover
and Hamburg airports.
Third-party maintenance
services
In recent years, IER GmbH has expanded
the scope of its services from standard
repair service for IER products to third-
party maintenance services for other types
of equipment.
The services now provided target IT support
for airport authorities, airlines,
handling agents, back of
fice systems,
check-in systems, boarding gates,
common use providers (CUTE), baggage
reconciliation and data infrastructure.
The scope of IER GmbH activity now also
includes specific ser
vices such as:
• the installation, de-installation, reallocation
and upgrade of IT equipment,
the provision of specialized fast
on-site support (24/7), with very strong
commitments on restore time,
• the complete provision of IT support
services from warranty handling
and in-house repair to logistics,
project management,
• refurbishment of IER equipment.

2D BARCODE:
IER suite for check-in
and boarding solutions
In order to develop cost reduction possibilities
in the air transportation industry, whilst at the
same time enhancing convenience for the air
traveler, 3 years ago IATA launched the
Simplifying the Business Program. Bar Coded
Boar
ding Passes, commonly named BCBPs,
are one of the five initiatives of this program
which, accor
ding to IA
TA, enables the passenger
to print out his or her boarding pass at home
and to check-in easily on a self-service kiosk.
Today the use of bar coded boarding passes
is on the rise, driven by industry self-service
facilities and cost cutting imperatives.
The adoption of barcodes facilitates the growth
of new technology solutions such as self-service
check-in kiosks and self-boar
ding gates.
BCBPs allow passengers to travel with just
one boarding document, even for multi-
segment itineraries.
The IATA standard, based on the PDF 417
barcode, makes it possible to put an entire
itinerary on a unique boarding pass thanks
to the 2D barcode's high information
storage capacities.
IA
TA has set a timeline for BCBPs, stating
that by 2008 all airlines must be BCBP
capable and by 2010 all boar
ding passes
must be BCBPs. Both barcode and magnetic
stripe boarding passes will be accepted until
2010 but airlines and airpor
ts must star
t
preparing for this deadline now.

FROM ONE REVOLUTION
TO ANOTHER
The barcode is currently revolutionizing
air transportation, and with IER's
new range of 100% barcode check-in
solutions you can make the most of it
right away. Read all about it in this
issue: three new printers, the IER 400,
IER 500 and IER 560 to cover all your
check-in printing r
equirements and
two readers, the IER 600 and IER 610,
the only transitional reader equipped
with both a barcode reader and
a motorized ATB reader.
But this first revolution is paving
the way to others. As we are constantly
striving to help you further cut costs,
our new range features technologies
(IP connections and Linux OS) which
are already preparing for a second
revolution in equipment maintenance.
We will soon be introducing a supervision
software program and offering a mainte-
nance service that should drastically
reduce operating costs while rendering
equipment available more than 99%
of the time.
